There are only a short list of saxophone players throughout history who have revolutionized the possibilities of the instrument and transformed the spectrum of sound to a whole new dimension. People like Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, John Zorn, and Skerik have continued push the evolutionary bar higher and higher while developing their own unique style of delivery. Brad Walker is someone who’s name should definitely be considered on that list. If you’ve only seen him with Johnny Sketch, The Brad Walker Quintet, or various other projects, then you’ve only scratched the surface of what he does with Redrawblak. This improvised Trio, complete with Aurora Nealand and Paul Thibodeaux has gone beyond any conventional sound scape experience to deliver a joyful noise that hits deep in the psyche. The citizens of New Orleans are lucky to have the privilege to get to see this project in action live tonight at Open Ears.
Here’s what’s going on tonight:
- 6:00pm Tuba Skinny at Spotted Cat
- 8:00pm Stanton Moore Trio at Snug Harbor
- 10:30pm Redrawblak at Blue Nile (upstairs)
